A Mass for St. Augustine of Canterbury
The opening concert of Blue Heron’s subscription season features an anonymous Missa sine nomine. Another gem from the Peterhouse partbooks (c. 1540), this characterful, quirky, and entirely anonymous work was perhaps dedicated to Canterbury’s local hero, St. Augustine. This program will also be presented by Blue Heron in Weston, on October 17.
December 18, 19 & 20 (Thursday and Friday at 8 PM, Saturday at 2:30 PM)
Christmas in 15th-century France & Burgundy
Music for Advent and Christmas by Du Fay, Josquin, Obrecht, Brumel & others. Pre-concert speaker To Be Determined.
Ockeghem@600: Ockeghem, Binchois & Du Fay
With this concert we embark on a long-term project exploring the complete works of Johannes Ockeghem (c.1420-1497), one of the greatest musicians of all time, as we approach the 600th anniversary of his birth (more or less). This concert features music by Ockeghem and two very famous colleagues from the previous generation. Pre-concert talk by Sean Gallagher.
Ockeghem@600: Ockeghem, Busnoys, Regis, Caron & Faugues
This concert explores the music of the five “modern” composers lauded by the 15th-century theorist Johannes Tinctoris: “All of these men’s works exhale such sweetness that, in my opinion, they should be considered worthy not only for men and heroes, but even for the immortal gods.” Pre-concert talk by Sean Gallagher.
Free pre-concert talks begin 45 minutes before each concert, and are sponsored in part by The Cambridge Society for Early Music.
